Abstract:

This study was carried out to reveal the effect of sports habits on cognitive skills. There search was conducted with 108 people, 53 of whom do sports and 55 who do not. A questionnaire consisting of demographic questions developed by the researcher, Benton Visual Memory Test and Cattel 2a Intellience Test were applied to the participants. The collected data were analyzed in the SPSS. 22 package program. There is a high level of significant difference in the mean scores of Benton Visual Memory Test and Cattel 2a Intelligence Test according tothe state of doing sports. (p=0,001). When we look at the averages, it was found that the significant difference was in favor of the participants who did sports. As a result of multiple comparisons of the process of doing sports, it was revealed that there was a significant diffrence between those who did not do sports for 3-5 years and between those who did sports for 1-3 years and 3-5 years. When the results were examined according to the status of doing sport regularly, a high level of significant difference was found between those who do sports and those who do not ( p<0,05). According to the results of multiple comparisons of reasons for starting sports, it was determined that there was a high level of significant difference between those who did not have a reason to start sports and those who started sports because it had a fun aspect. As a result of the comparison of intelligence levels, a high level of significant difference was found (p<0,05). According to the result of our research, it was concluded that the habit of doing sports has positive effects on cognitive skills and intelligence in individuals with normal development. In the study conducted among 108 participant, it was seen that the results of the Cattel Intelligence Test and Benton Visual Memory Test were higher for the individuals who did sports. The results of the study support the oppinions about the positive effect of the habit of doing sports on cognitive skills. Among these views, the importance of regular and long-term sports has been confirmet by the literature study. The results of our research revealed that not only the effect of sports on the cognitive skills of individuals, but also the positive effect of physical activity and motor development on cognitives kils.
