Abstract:Ill ABSTRACT In this research, the existing evaluation procedures of 4th and 5th graders in English courses and portfolio assessment which is supposed to be a more effective assessment instrument for reflecting the students' performances than the traditional evaluation procedures are studied. Since the traditional examination procedures, which applied to 4th and 5th graders in order to evaluate the young learners' English skills are adapted from those of adults, are inappropriate to the level of primary school children. Furthermore, since the current examination procedures of 4th and 5th graders could not evaluate the young learners' language performance which is an important aspect in language teaching, the Portfolio Assessment is introduced as an alternative assessment instrument. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the appropriateness of the portfolio assessment, which combines instruction and evaluation procedures in the language courses, as an alternative assessment tool for the evaluation of 4th and 5th graders' English courses in primary schools in Türkiye.
