Reconstruction of Gender in Feminist Science Fiction: A Discourse Analysis of Melisa Parlak's Stories

Abstract

Science fiction is a powerful narrative that questions real-world issues through alternative universes, futures, or societies, and enables critical rethinking of structures such as gender, class, power, ethics, identity, technology, etc. However, even within this alternative and free universe of science fiction, the roles and responsibilities assigned to female characters are often reproduced through patriarchal gender norms in the real world. Feminist science fiction draws attention to how gender roles and representations are shaped and reproduced. The purpose of this research is to explore the discourse on gender roles and representations in feminist science fiction through the stories in "Avunma Mekanizması" by Melisa Parlak, a Turkish science fiction author. For this purpose, six stories selected from the book are examined within the framework of gender roles, gender stereotypes, and gender behavior and appearance. In the analysis of these stories, critical discourse analysis is used. Analyses are conducted using Teun A. van Dijk's Socio- Cognitive Approach. The findings demonstrate that the stories reconstruct the culturally reproduced gender roles in society and the interaction of the patriarchal structure on people within a dystopian fictional framework. In this context, the stories serve a function within the framework of feminist theory, making sex and gender inequalities visible and re-questioning the patriarchal system.
Bilimkurgu, gerçek dünyaya ilişkin sorunları alternatif evrenler, alternatif bir gelecek veya alternatif toplumlar üzerinden sorgulayan ve cinsiyet, sınıf, iktidar, güç, etik, kimlik, teknoloji vb. yapıları eleştirel biçimde yeniden düşünmeye olanak sağlayan güçlü anlatılardır. Ancak bilimkurgunun bu alternatif ve özgür evreninde bile, kadın karakterlere yüklenen rol ve sorumlulukların gerçek dünyadaki ataerkil cinsiyet normları üzerinden yeniden üretildiği görülür. Feminist bilimkurgu edebiyatı, toplumsal cinsiyet rolleri ve temsillerinin nasıl şekillendiği ve yeniden üretildiği konusuna dikkat çeker. Bu araştırmanın amacı, feminist bilimkurguda toplumsal cinsiyet rollerine ve temsilleriyle ilgili söylemi, yerli bilimkurgu edebiyatı yazarlarından Melisa Parlak’ın “Avunma Mekanizması” adlı kitabındaki öyküler üzerinden ortaya koymaktır. Bu amaçla, kitapta yer alan öyküler arasından seçilen altı öykü toplumsal cinsiyet rolleri, cinsiyet kalıp yargıları ve toplumsal cinsiyet davranış-görünüm çerçevesinde ele alınmıştır. Araştırma kapsamında altı öykü eleştirel söylem analizi ile incelenmiş, analizler Teun A. van Dijk’in Sosyo-Bilişsel Yaklaşımı ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çalışmanın bulguları, incelenen öykülerde toplumda kültürel anlamda yeniden üretilen cinsiyet rolleri[1]  ve ataerkil yapının insanlar üzerindeki etkileşiminin distopik bir kurgu zemininde tekrar inşa edildiğini göstermektedir. Bu bağlamda öyküler, feminist kuram çerçevesinde cinsiyet ve toplumsal cinsiyet eşitsizliklerini görünür hale getiren ve ataerkil sistemi yeniden sorgulatan bir fonksiyonu işlevsel kılmaktadır.
