The cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is an important pest of stored legumes with a worldwide distribution. In this study, the effects of six chickpea cultivars, Aksu, G & uuml;l & uuml;mser, Hasanbey, I(center dot)nci, Se & ccedil;kin, and Sezenbey, on the life table, population parameters, and reproductive performance of C. maculatus were evaluated under controlled laboratory conditions (28 degrees C, 70 % RH, 16L: 8D), using the agestage, two-sex life table method. The longest total developmental duration was observed in I(center dot)nci and Hasanbey, whereas the shortest developmental period was observed in G & uuml;l & uuml;mser. Adult longevity reached its highest values on I(center dot)nci, while the shortest female longevity was observed on Hasanbey. Female fecundity was highest on G & uuml;l & uuml;mser and Hasanbey, and lowest on I(center dot)nci. The intrinsic rate of increase (r) was greatest for G & uuml;l & uuml;mser and lowest for I(center dot)nci, with corresponding net reproductive rates (R0), respectively. Age-specific fertility (mx) reached its highest peak on G & uuml;l & uuml;mser, whereas I(center dot)nci showed the lowest reproductive performance. Based on these demographic parameters, G & uuml;l & uuml;mser and Hasanbey are identified as highly susceptible cultivars, while I(center dot)nci represents a relatively resistant host for C. maculatus. Based on the population projection created using all the available data, the estimated population of the G & uuml;l & uuml;mser cultivar is considerably larger than that of others. The use of resistant cultivars such as I(center dot)nci may serve as a safe, sustainable, and chemical-free strategy for stored crop protection and long-term storage pest management.
