Özet
Cancer ranks second among the diseases causing the most deaths worldwide. As health systems in different countries adapt to their income levels, the diagnosis and treatment of cancer also evolve, impacting patients' quality of life. Being diagnosed with cancer is seen as a serious disease that can lead to death for many. Knowledge about the disease, belief systems, and culture are crucial in accepting and adapting to it. In disease management, it is often preferred to hide the diagnosis. However, providing accurate information and adopting the right approach for both the patient and their loved ones ensure the treatment process proceeds effectively and lead to positive outcomes in recovery and rehabilitation. At this stage, health professionals have vital responsibilities. Recognizing the characteristics of patients and their families, understanding their perceptions of cancer, and managing the process appropriately all depend on employing practical communication skills. Using language that carefully balances hope and realism is essential, as it helps in understanding and being understood. Health professionals should adopt an empathetic approach, offering reassurance, a warm touch, and honest, respectful, and meticulous communication with patients diagnosed with cancer. The healing power of good communication should never be underestimated, and efforts should be made to enhance the quality of life for both patients and their families.
