Motor and mental development in the child is the result of the interaction between constitutional factors and environmental factors such as gender, personality characteristics and sociocultural level. Developmental delays may involve all areas of development (motor, personal-social, language), or a particular functional area. The former is usually due to malformations, damage of the central nervous system by various disorders or events, or genetic causes. Medically treatable conditions such as hypothyroidism or phenylketonuria should particularly be sought and ruled out. More specific delays can be related to pediatric disorders, hearing difficulties, orthopedic problems, or environmental or psychogenic causes. Early detection of developmental delays allow the institution of specific treatment, and also the establishment of an educational program appropriate for the child's age and developmental level. Early diagnosis of mental and/or motor delays is among the main responsibilities of the physician caring for children.
