Abstract
Plug and play interoperability is viewed as an essential feature for Personal Health Devices; however commercial devices remain proprietary. This paper describes the research undertaken in the development of the IEEE 11073-10206 standard to provide plug and play interoperability and its implementation as the Bluetooth General Health Sensor (GHS). It explains the concepts adopted in the IEEE 11073-10206 information model and the use of IEEE 11073-10101 nomenclature to support a plug-and-play semantic architecture. It describes how the concepts of IEEE 11073-10206 have been implemented as the services defined in the GHS profile. It reports findings from an implementation of a platform that integrates proprietary, Bluetooth and GHS to form an eco-system of interoperable devices and its extension to an interoperable end-to-end system based on IHE PCD 01 or FHIR (profiles of HL7) to send semantically interoperable data to the enterprise. Gaps in the GHS specifications are identified and recommendations made.
