The aim of this study is to examine licensed athletes’ sport self-efficacy and hopelessness levels in terms of various demographic and academic variables, and to reveal the relationship between these two psychological constructs. The research was conducted using a descriptive and correlational survey design. The population of the study consisted of undergraduate students aged 18 and above studying at Faculty of Sport Sciences during the 2025–2026 academic year. The sample comprised 151 licensed athletes who were selected through random sampling and voluntarily participated in the study. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, the Self-Efficacy Scale developed by Riggs et al. (1994) and adapted into Turkish by Öcel, and the Beck Hopelessness Scale developed by Beck et al. and adapted into Turkish by Seber et al. and Durak and Palabıyıkoğlu. In the analysis of the data, the normality assumption was tested using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test. Since the data were not normally distributed, Mann–Whitney U and Kruskal–Wallis tests were employed. The findings revealed that sport self-efficacy levels did not differ significantly according to gender and type of sport (p > 0.05). However, male athletes had significantly higher scores than female athletes in both the total score and sub-dimensions of the Beck Hopelessness Scale (p < 0.01). Additionally, comparisons based on academic departments indicated that students studying in the Physical Education Teaching department had higher sport self-efficacy levels, whereas those studying in the Recreation department exhibited higher levels of hopelessness (p< 0.05).

In conclusion, sport self-efficacy and hopelessness levels of licensed athletes are associated with variables such as gender and academic context. These findings highlight the importance of developing psychological support and career counseling programs for students in sport sciences.
