Özet

Neuroleptanalgesia is defined as the suppression of the central nervous system, resulting indecreased responsiveness to environmental and painful stimuli. In human medicine, it is alsoknown to induce short-term retrograde amnesia. In veterinary practice, the term is used todescribe protocols combining an opioid and a sedative agent, these protocols are particularlyfavoured for feline patients. Quadriceps muscle contracture is an orthopaedic complication thattypically arises following trauma or limb stabilisation, often requiring regular physiotherapyfor successful resolution. This case report aims to describe the physiotherapy management of athree-year-old male mixed-breed dog with paraparesis, bilateral quadriceps contracture, severepain and marked aggression. The patient had previously undergone plate osteosynthesis andexcision arthroplasty due to fractures of the left ilium and acetabulum. In order to enablephysiotherapy sessions to be carried out safely and effectively for both patient and veterinarian, neuroleptanalgesia was administered intramuscularly every other day for two weeks using acombination of butorphanol (0,2 mg/kg), xylazine (1 mg/kg) and ketamine (5 mg/kg). Thisprotocol enabled 30-minute physiotherapy sessions and improved postoperative painmanagement. The neuroleptanalgesia regimen contributed to the successful completion of therehabilitation process, ultimately resolving the quadriceps contracture. Keywords: Dog, Neuroleptanalgesia, Quadriceps contracture
