Impact of a Parent Training Intervention on Turkish Mothers' Implementation of Milieu Teaching Strategies and Language Outcomes of Children With Intellectual Disability

Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of a parent training intervention on Turkish mothers' use of milieu teaching (MT) strategies and the language development of their children with intellectual disability, using an adapted-multiple-probe across participants single-case experimental research design. Three mother-child dyads were enrolled in the study. The participating children were between 36 and 44 months old. Mothers underwent a 4-hour training session followed by 30-minute home coaching sessions twice a week for 8 to 10 weeks. Results showed significant improvements in mothers' correct use of MT strategies, which were maintained postcoaching. There was a notable corresponding rise in the percentage of correct responses from their children concerning language targets. All three mothers and their spouses expressed satisfaction with the parent training intervention. Implications for future research are discussed. Este estudio investig & oacute; la efectividad de una intervenci & oacute;n de capacitaci & oacute;n para padres sobre el uso de estrategias de ense & ntilde;anza en el entorno (EE) por parte de madres turcas y el desarrollo del lenguaje de sus hijos con discapacidad intelectual, mediante un dise & ntilde;o experimental de caso & uacute;nico con m & uacute;ltiples pruebas adaptadas entre participantes. Se incluyeron en el estudio tres d & iacute;adas madre-hijo. Los ni & ntilde;os participantes ten & iacute;an entre 36 y 44 meses de edad. Las madres participaron en una sesi & oacute;n de capacitaci & oacute;n de 4 horas, seguida de sesiones de tutor & iacute;a en casa de 30 minutos dos veces por semana durante 8 a 10 semanas. Los resultados mostraron mejoras significativas en el uso correcto de las estrategias de EE por parte de las madres, las cuales se mantuvieron despu & eacute;s de la mentor & iacute;a. Se observ & oacute; un aumento correspondiente notable en el porcentaje de respuestas correctas de sus hijos con respecto a los objetivos ling & uuml;& iacute;sticos. Las tres madres y sus parejas expresaron satisfacci & oacute;n con la intervenci & oacute;n de capacitaci & oacute;n para padres. Se discuten las implicaciones para futuras investigaciones.
