Özet

Dear colleagues, the strength of the discipline of family medicine comes not only from its ability to provide inclusive and continuous care, but also from its ability to build its own body of knowledge. Every specialty in medicine should have a defined body of knowledge applicable to patient care and an active research culture that feeds this body. Family medicine, on the other hand, has historically tended to apply research produced by other disciplines, and its own research outputs have been relatively limited. Indeed, one review found that family medicine research remains "woefully underdeveloped" even today, when it is increasingly recognized how critical primary care is to health systems. However, at a time of increased emphasis on primary care in health policy, family medicine has the opportunity to define itself more strongly from a scientific perspective and to generate the evidence itself to improve patient care and population health. It is now widely recognized that quality research activities are indispensable for the effectiveness of primary care and that family medicine as a discipline needs to improve its capacity in this area.
