Abstract

It is known that 5-flourouracil has negative effects on healing of colonic anastomosis. To decrease these negative effects, beside 5-FU, GM-CSF and IL-2 were given to animals which had undergone colon resection and anastomosis. In the study, 40 male New-Zealand rabbits were used. All of the subjects underwent colonic resection and end to end colocolic anastomosis. Then the subjects were divided in to 4 groups each containing 10 rabits. From the first to 4th postoperative day animals received saline solution in group I (control group), 5-FU in group II, 5FU+GM-CSF in group III, 5-FU+IL-2 in group IV. All of the subjects were sacrificed on the 7th postoperative day. Burst pressure of the anastomoses were measured. Tissue hydroxyproline values were measured biochemically and wound healing scores were investigated histopathologically. In the comparison of burst pressures, tissue hydroxyproline values and wound healing scores, statistically significant differences were found between the control group and study groups. In the comparison of those three values among the study groups, no significant difference was found. We conclude that 5-FU disturbs wound healing and GM- CSF and IL-2 which have been used with 5-FU do not enhance wound healing.
