The Scale of New Age Beliefs: The Study of Its Validity and Reliability

Abstract

New Age, rather than a period of time to express any very popular in
today's world, refers to a unique syncretic 􁈺uniting􁈻 and eclectic 􁈺selective􁈻
belief system. The purposes of this study are to develop the New Age Beliefs
Scale and to ensure the reliability and validity of the scale. To this end, the
New Age Beliefs Questionnaire developed by the authors was administered to
those who have completed undergraduate education and continued still to
undergraduate education who randomly selected a total of 504 people,
including 292 women and 212 men living in Malatya, Samsun, Trabzon and
Istanbul in December, 2012. In order to test the construct validity of the scale
the factor analysis was done and it was seen that the first factor was found asthe factor loadings for the principal components. The scale consists of 20
items. Rotated factor analysis of the scale items were collected from three
factors. The correlation coefficients between the scores of the item with the
total scale scores 􁈺p 􀵏0.01􁈻 level was significant. For the reliability of the
scale of New Age Beliefs, test‐retest reliability, Cronbach's alpha reliability
test‐part test and control methods were used. Of the scale, the test‐retest
reliability coefficient was 0,89; the test‐retest reliability coefficient was 0,89;
the Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient was 0,90. According to these
results, it was concluded that New Age Beliefs Scale is a valid and reliable.

Yeni Çağ 􁈺New Age􁈻 kavramı, zaman olarak herhangi bir dönemi ifade
etmekten çok günümüz dünyasında popülerleşen, kendine özgü senkretik
􁈺birleştirici􁈻 ve eklektik 􁈺seçmeci􁈻 bir inanç sistemini ifade etmektedir. Bu
çalışmanın amacı, Yeni Çağ İnanışları Ölçeği geliştirmek, geliştirilen bu ölçeğin
geçerlik ve güvenirliğini sağlamaktır. Bu amaçla, geliştirilen Yeni Çağ
İnanışları Ölçeği’nin uygulamaları, Malatya, Samsun, Trabzon ve İstanbul
illerinde lisans öğrenimi gören veya lisans öğrenimini bitirmiş olan kişilerden
tesadüfî olarak seçilen 292 kadın ve 212 erkek olmak üzere toplam 504 kişi
üzerinde Aralık–2012 tarihinde yapılmıştır. Ölçeğin yapı geçerliği için faktör
analizi yapılmış ve maddelerin faktör yüklerinin temel bileşenler analizinde
birinci faktörde toplandığı görülmüştür. Ölçek, 20 maddeden oluşmuştur.
Döndürülmüş faktör analizi sonucu ise ölçeğin maddeleri üç faktörde
toplanmıştır. Ölçeğin toplam puanları ile madde puanları arasında bulunan
karelasyon katsayıları 􁈺p􀵏0,01􁈻 düzeyinde önemli görülmüştür. Yeni Çağ
İnanışları Ölçeği’nin güvenirliği için, test‐tekrar test, test‐yarı test ve
Cronbach Alpha güvenirlik kontrol yöntemleri kullanılmıştır. Ölçeğin, testtekrar
test güvenirlik katsayısı 0,89; test‐yarı test güvenirlik katsayısı 0,89;
Cronbach Alpha güvenirlik katsayısı ise 0,90 olarak bulunmuştur. Bu
sonuçlara göre, Yeni Çağ İnanışları Ölçeği’nin geçerli ve güvenilir olduğu
kanısına varılmıştır.
