Walter Benjamin published numerous works in the fields of philosophy, politics, history, and social sciences at the beginning of the 20th century; he also translated various masterpieces of reputable authors such as Baudelaire and Proust into German. He advocated specific approaches which were quite different from prevailing ideologies of the age, and he always preferred to use implicit language; therefore, the works of Walter Benjamin have been frequently discussed in the studies carried out in social sciences since the 20th century. When his works are analyzed within the scope of translation studies, it is seen that his article entitled "Translator's Task", which was published as a preface for the translation of Tableaux Parisiens written by Baudelaire, developed a new point of view in translation studies, and that it lead the theoreticians to question existing approaches in translation studies.In the above-mentioned article, Benjamin focused on the purpose of translation and the points that should be taken into consideration in translation process; he also regarded the translation act as an art form, and he emphasized that artistic utilizations were the most striking elements in translation process. He also put emphasis on qualitative characteristics and linguistic utilizations of the masterpieces to be translated, and he supported his ideas by referring to poetic view of well-known French poet, Stéphane Mallarmé.The objective of this study is to point out the importance of Benjamin's views in translation studies and to demonstrate that his ideas, which seem difficult to be applied, can make great contribution to the translation process. In this regard, this study will analyze the ideas and approaches supported by Benjamin in terms of translation, and it will also argue the validity of Benjamin's approach in translation process by focusing on the poem entitled "Le vierge, le vivace et le bel aujourd'hui..." written by Stéphane Mallarmé and its different translations. This study will also make reference to various translation theories and it will enable us to compare different ideologies in translation process.
Walter Benjamin, 20. yüzyılın başlarında, felsefe, siyaset, tarih ve sosyal bilimler alanında birçok eser vermiş, ayrıca Baudelaire ve Proust gibi ünlü yazarların çeşitli eserlerini Almancaya çevirmiştir. Yaşadığı dönemde hâkim olan görüşlerden farklı anlayışları savunması ve eserlerinde kullandığı üstü kapalı üslup nedeniyle Walter Benjamin'in eserleri 20. yüzyıldan itibaren sosyal alanlardaki çalışmalara konu olmuştur. Çeviri alanından bakıldığında, Baudelaire'in Tableaux Parisiens adlı kitabının Almancaya çevirisinin giriş kısmında yer alan "Çevirmenin Görevi" adlı makalesi, çeviri çalışmalarına yeni bir bakış açısı kazandırmış ve var olan çeviri yaklaşımlarının sorgulanmasına neden olmuştur.Benjamin, çevirinin amacı ve çeviride dikkat edilecek hususlar üzerinde yoğunlaştığı bu makalesinde çeviri sürecini bir sanat formu olarak ele almış ve sanatsal kullanımın, çeviride değerlendirilmesi gereken en önemli husus olduğunu vurgulamıştır. Çevrilecek eserlerin niteliksel değerleri ve dilsel kullanımları üzerine vurgu yapmış ve makalesinde yer verdiği görüşleri Fransız şair Stéphane Mallarmé'nin şiir anlayışına atıfta bulunarak desteklemiştir.Bu çalışmanın amacı, Walter Benjamin'in çeviri mesleği konusundaki görüşlerinin çeviri sürecindeki önemine dikkat çekmek ve uygulamada zorluk teşkil edeceği düşünülen fikirlerinin aslında çeviri sürecine ciddi katkıda bulunabilecek yöntemler olduğunu göstermektir. Bu bağlamda, çalışma kapsamında, Walter Benjamin'in çevirmenlik mesleği hakkında paylaştığı görüşler değerlendirilecek; Stéphane Mallarmé'nin "Le vierge, le vivace et le bel aujourd'hui..." adlı şiiri ve söz konusu şiirinin farklı çevirileri incelenerek Benjamin'in çeviri konusunda benimsediği anlayış ele alınacaktır. Çalışma dâhilinde diğer çeviri anlayışlarına da yer verilerek, farklı görüşleri karşılaştırma olanağı tanınacaktır.
