This study was conducted to evaluate the applicability of the generalized estimating equations (GEE) approach for estimating traditional growth curve models in hybrid turkeys and to examine the effect of different working correlation structures used under GEE on model fit. To describe the growth process, body weight measurements obtained from 144 hybrid turkeys at 1, 14, 49, 112, 126, 140, and 154 days of age were used, the same analyses were also repeated on a smaller sample consisting of 30 individuals randomly selected from this group. To account for the dependence arising from repeated measurements, third-degree polynomial growth curve models including only fixed effects were fitted under the GEE framework using independent (Independent), exchangeable (Exchangeable), first-order autoregressive [AR(1)], M-dependent (M-dependent), and unstructured (Unstructured) working correlation structures. Within GEE, parameter estimates associated with the different working correlation matrices were updated based on estimation using the available data and Pearson-residual-based procedures. Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) values were used to compare the fit performance of models. In the large sample, the models using independent and exchangeable correlation structures provided the best fit with the lowest AIC values, whereas the models based on the M-dependent structure and Pearson correlation showed the weakest fit. Similarly, in the small sample, the independent and exchangeable structures were identified as the best models, while the M-dependent structure exhibited the poorest estimation performance. The findings showed that, in growth curve models established within the GEE framework for hybrid turkeys, working correlation structures that either assume no dependence between time points (independent) or assume the same correlation for all pairs of time points (exchangeable) provided the best fit according to AIC.
