Semi-stylized floral ornamentation evaluated within the şükûfe style in Ottoman tile (kâşî) art has generally been examined in scholarship through widely used examples such as the tulip, rose, carnation, and hyacinth. This approach makes it difficult to reveal the distribution, place within the decorative program, and iconographic meanings of floral representations that appear more rarely in architectural tile decoration. In the literature, such rare floral motifs have been mentioned only briefly; their traceable examples within architectural and spatial contexts and their symbolic layers have not been systematically evaluated together. This study aims to identify, at the architectural scale, floral representations that fall outside the common motif repertoire and to evaluate them within the framework of the spaces in which they appear, their compositional arrangements, and their cultural associations. The research was conducted through a qualitative method and focuses solely on architectural tile decoration, excluding evânî, that is, daily-use objects such as plates, bowls, and pitchers, from the scope of analysis. Through a selected group of buildings in Istanbul, ranging from the Rüstem Paşa Mosque (1561) to the Hekimoğlu Ali Paşa Mosque (1735), the formal characteristics of floral representations, their positions within compositions, and their modes of repetition within the decorative scheme were examined through a visual-descriptive method. The findings were interpreted comparatively with the floral imagery found in Ottoman dîvân poetry and Sufi texts. The analysis shows that flowers such as the violet, iris, zerrin/ narcissus, and cyclamen (buhur-u Meryem) were often used at a subsidiary scale; through their associations in literary and Sufi texts, however, these elements formed a symbolic field of meaning within the decorative program. The findings also indicate that these choices were not coincidental; rather, the representations in question were positioned, especially in spaces such as mosques, tombs, and harems, in line with particular aesthetic and representational tendencies. In this respect, the study contributes to a rereading of floral ornamentation in Ottoman tile art beyond its formal boundaries, with attention to its cultural and symbolic dimensions. In addition, the periodic concentrations of certain representations and their relations with workshop productions were traced, and it has been shown how the same flower was transformed across different compositional schemes. These findings indicate that these rarely encountered floral motifs should be considered not merely as indicators of variety, but as elements that reinforce the meaning of space, guide the viewer’s perception, and add detail to the language of ornamentation.
