Perceptions of Prospective Teachers about Deficiencies of Pre-Service Teacher Education and Suggestions

Özet

The purpose of the present study is to determine (a) the perceptions of prospective teachers about deficiency of their education and (b) the suggestions of students' about how to improve pre-service teacher education program. The sample of the study consisted of 115 (66 female, 49 male) undergraduate students from different departments of Faculty of Education of Middle East Technical University. The perceptions of the students were gathered by the "Pre-service Teacher Education Evaluation Form" which was composed of 15 open-ended and closed-ended questions. The form was developed by the researchers. Content analysis method was used to assess the obtained data and they were coded and classified by two different researchers. The results of the study revealed that students did not view material using in their courses and school practicum courses enough to develop their teaching skills. Suggestions can be summarized as the number and the quality of the practicum courses and elective courses should be increased.
