Objective: To investigate the levels of interleukin 2 (IL-2) and their correlation with severity of organ damage in patients with traumas. Patients and methods: We measured the levels of IL-2 in 35 patients with traumas and 20 healthy volunteers as controls. All patients were characterized according to injury severity score. Blood samples were taken on admission (within 6 h of injury), and 24 h, and 1, 3, 5, 7 and 14 days after trauma. IL-2 levels were measured by ELISA. Results: The levels of IL-2 were higher in patients with traumas than in controls. Serum IL-2 levels were significantly elevated at the early period of trauma and reached a peak 24 h after trauma, then slowly decreased to normal values. Changes of serum IL-2 levels were significantly correlated with changes of serum GPT, CK, LDH, BUN and creatinine levels in patients with trauma. Conclusion: These data show that IL-2 increases in patients with traumas; IL-2 therefore can be considered an useful marker for evaluating the severity of trauma.
