Özet

Identity in the urban context is a part of self, just like gender identity, political identity and ethnic identity. This study focuses on urban quality and social support, which are not structurally included in urban identity measurement and urban identity, but are thought to make the measurement of urban identity much more sound. Therefore, The Urban Identity Scale for Istanbul (applicable in other metropolitan cities as well), the Perceived Urban Quality Scale and the Perceived Urban Social Support Scale were developed for this study. The psychometric properties of the scales were tested on 225 people (27% male, 73% female). The Urban Identity Scale measures the degree of urban identity's centrality in three dimensions (identification, responsibility, and recognition/familiarity) and the Cronbach alpha value of the scale is .94. Perceived Urban Quality measures the assessment of individuals regarding the unique characteristics of the city in five dimensions: Perception of city plan, perception of gain/advantage, perception of security, perception of habitability, and perception of transport quality. The Cronbach alpha value of this scale is .86. Lastly, perception of individuals regarding the extent of social support avaliable in their city is measured by the Perceived Urban Social Support Scale which was constructed through one dimension and which included nine items. The Cronbach alpha value of this scale is .89. Validity and reliability tests of the scales show that these scales are suitable for future research. Suggestions for the use of scales for future research and the limitations of the current study are discussed in the light of the literature.
