Animal disease models are utilized as in vivo models at various stages of biomedical research. These models play a crucial role in elucidating the pathophysiology of human diseases and identifying new treatment options. Animal models replicate various disorders and disease conditions observed in humans, such as infections, diabetes, obesity, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer. Additionally , these models are employed in preclinical trials for drug development, toxicology studies, and the exploration of biomedical equipment. One of the key steps in establishing these models is the precise selection of the animal species. Selecting the most suitable animal species not only ensures the scientific validity of the study but is also crucial for ensuring the welfare of the animals, and preventing pain, distress, and stress. Animal models, which may include rodents (mice, rats), rabbits, primates, pigs, and zebrafish, play a key role in advancing innovative therapeutic approaches. Furthermore, alternative species like nematodes and arthropods are increasingly used as animal models in contemporary biomedical research. This chapter comprehensively assesses the concept of animal experimental models, highlighting the importance of specific experimental models and experimental design in biomedical studies.
