The aim of this study is to investigate the issue according to the available
information and documents on the beginning of match-fixing, incentives and
corruption in sports. A literature review was conducted. From the beginning of the
ancient games, match-fixing, cheating and corruption started in sports. Bribe
payers and recipients were fined when caught. Fines were used under the control of
priests. Sculptures were made with these fines. According to current information
and documents, match-fixing and corruption started in sports in ancient Greece and
in the Olympics. Although agreements were generally made between the athletes,
coaches, managers, referees and even the relatives of the athletes were also
involved in match-fixing and cheating. Trying to prevent match-fixing athletes by
writing their names on the inscriptions suggests that this situation was very
common at that time. Perhaps the reason for banning the ancient Olympics is not
just the nude competition of the Greeks, as stated, but the unavoidable immorality
and corruption in sports.
