This article focuses on Nahvü’l-ʿârifîn, a treatise by ʿAbdülmecid b. Shaykh Naṣûḥ (d. 996/1588), one of the multifaceted figures of the sixteenth-century Ottoman scholarly and Sufi milieu, in which he interprets Sufi truths through the technical possibilities of grammar (naḥw). The tradition of “allusive grammar” (ishārī naḥw), which began in the history of Sufism with ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Qushayrī, establishes an ontological and epistemological bridge between the outward and formal structure of language and truth. The study first examines the historical development of this literature and, on the basis of the sources identified from al-Qushayrī to Ibn ʿAjība, sets forth the characteristic features of the genre. At the centre of the research lies the critical edition, translation, and analysis of Nahvü’l-ʿârifīn, prepared on the basis of its manuscript copies, a work that has not previously been the subject of an independent study. The examination has shown that ʿAbdülmecid Efendi preserves the classical grammatical system in its entirety while attributing allusive and Sufi meanings to its technical terms. Nahvü’l-ʿârifīn establishes an intertextual relationship with al-Qushayrī’s Nahvü’l-qulūb al-ṣaghīr; however, in terms of conceptual definitions, it follows a richer and more original method of interpretation. In this respect, the study aims to demonstrate the continuity of the Ottoman tradition of allusive interpretation and to bring to light the limits of the terminological interaction that Sufism established with grammar as one of the other scholarly disciplines.
