The Relationship between University Students’ Inferiority Feeling and Their General Level of Belonging

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between university student’ inferiority feeling and their general level of belonging. Second goal is to examine university students’ inferiority feeling according to gender, perceived socioeconomic level and level of the class. Third goal is to examine university students’ sense of general belonging according to gender, perceived socioeconomic level and level of the class. Literature on sense of general belonging and inferiority feeling has been searched. Studies on inferiority feeling and sense of general belonging has been examined. The correlational research design was used as study method. The problem statement of the research is whether there is a significiant relationship between university students’ inferiority feeling and their general level of belonging. İn this study developed six sub-problem. The study group in the study was obtained by easy sampling method, one of the non- probability sampling methods. Accordingly the study group of the research consists of 326 university students studying at different universities in the 2019-2020 academic year. The data in the research were obtained using Google form due to the pandemic. Personal İnformation Form, which was prepared by researher and asked the gender, the level of the class, perceived socioeconomic level was applied to the participants. Also Genereal Belongingness Scale adapted by Duru, İnferiority Feeling Scale developed by Akdoğan and Ceyhan were used as data collection tools in the study. General Belonging Scale consists of 12 items. General Belongingness Scale is seven-point likert type. General belongingness scale consists of 2 dimensions. Factors have been named as ‘’acceptance’’ and ‘’rejection’’. Necessary permissions were obtained from the scale owner. İnferiority Feeling Scale consists of 20 items. İnferiority Feeling Scale is five-point likert type. İnferiority feeling scale consists of 3 dimensions. Factors have been named as ‘’discouragement’’,’’negation of self value’’and ’’useless superiority effort’’. Nonparametric test were used in the statistical evaluations as the scales did not show normal distribution. The research data were analyzed by Spearman correlations, Kruskal Wallis- H and Mann- Whitney U test. Difference between the two groups was tested using the Mann-Whitney U test and the intergroup comparisons of parameters for multiple groups was made using the Kruskal Wallis- H test for comparison of qualitative data. Relationship between inferiority feeling and general level of belonging was examined by Spearman Correlation Test. According to the findings of the study a statistically significant negative relationship was observed between inferiority feeling and general level of belonging. According to the findings of the study, scores of inferiority feeling scale differ significantly according to perceived socioeconomic level. İt has been found that individuals who perceive their economic situation as low have higher levels of inedaquancy than other individuals. İn addition, scores of inferiority feeling according to the gender do not differ. The result of research indicates that scores of inferiority feeling scale do not differ according to the level of the class. The finding of study indicate that university students’ scores of general belongingness scale do not differ according to the gender. Seperate studies on sense of general belonging and inferiority feeling have been conducted but these two concepts not examined together. İt is thougt that this study is important from this point. According to the study, it is important to decrease sense of inedaquancy and increase the general sense of belonging, based on the relationship between inferiority feeling and sense of general belonging and other results obtained.According to the findings of a study university students’ inferiority feeling differ according to perceived socioeconomic level. Based on this results, it may be useful to inform individuals about scholarship and part-time job oppurtunities. With psychological counseling and guidance university students can be helped to look at existing situations from different perpectives. Also the study by Bozkurt (2019) supported this study. The result of research indicates that scores of inferiority feeling according to the gender do not differ. The study by Bozkurt (2019) supported this study. More and different studies on both sense of general belonging and inferiority feeling are needed. Researcher and field experts can work with different variables related to sense of general belonging and inferiority feeling.
Bu çalışmanın amacını, üniversite öğrencilerinin yetersizlik duygusu ile genel aidiyet düzeyleri arasındaki ilişkinin incelenmesi oluşturmaktadır. Araştırma, genel tarama modellerinden korelasyon araştırması olarak desenlemiştir. 219-2020 Eğitim öğretim yılında farklı üniversitelerde öğrenim gören 326 üniversite öğrencisi araştırmanın çalışma grubunu oluşturmuştur. Çalışma grubu, olasılık dışı örnekleme yöntemlerinden kolay örnekleme yöntemi ile belirlenmiştir. Araştırmada veriler, araştırmacılar tarafından hazırlanan kişisel bilgi formu, “Yetersizlik Duygusu Ölçeği” ve “Genel Aidiyet Ölçeği” ile elde edilmiştir. Google form aracılığı ile elde edilen verilerin analizinde, Spearman Korelasyon Testi, Kruskal Wallis-H ve Mann- Whitney U Testi kullanılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda üniversite öğrencilerinin yetersizlik duygusu ve genel aidiyet düzeyleri arasında istatiksel olarak negatif yönde anlamlı ilişki bulunmuştur. Yetersizlik duygusu puanlarının sınıf düzeyine göre değişimi Kruskal Wallis-H testi ile incelenmiştir. Kruskal Wallis-H testi sonucuna göre üniversite öğrencilerinin sınıf düzeyleri arasında yetersizlik duygusu ölçeği puanları açısından istatiksel olarak anlamlı bir ilişki bulunmamaktadır. Yetersizlik duygusu puanlarının algılanan sosyoekonomik düzeye göre değişimi Kruskal Wallis-H testi ile incelenmiştir. Yetersizlik duygusu puanlarının algılanan sosyoekonomik düzeye göre ise istatiksel olarak anlamlı farklılaştığı bulunmuştur. Genel aidiyet duygusu puanlarının sınıf düzeyi ve algılanan sosyoekonomik düzeye göre değişimin incelendiği Kruskal Wallis-H testi sonuçlarına göre algılanan genel aidiyet duygusu puanlarının sınıf düzeyi ve algılanan sosyoekonomik düzeye göre istatiksel olarak anlamlı farklılaşmadığı bulunmuştur. Yetersizlik duygusu puanlarının cinsiyete göre değişiminin incelendiği Mann- Whitney U testi sonuçlarına göre yetersizlik duygusu puanlarının cinsiyete göre anlamlı bir şekilde farklılaşmadığı gözlenmiştir. Genel aidiyet puanlarının cinsiyete göre değişiminin incelendiği Mann- Whitney U testi sonuçlarına göre genel aidiyet duygusu puanlarının cinsiyete göre anlamlı farklılık göstermediği görülmüştür.
