This article begins with a brief introduction to the city of Istanbul and its people (the concept of Istanbulite), before transitioning to the core subject: the Istanbul Gentleman and Lady (İstanbul Efendisi). Initially, the study defines the concepts of “gentility” and the “Istanbul Gentleman,” followed by an examination of the fundamental characteristic traits of this social archetype and an introduction to prominent examples. Subsequently, the article discusses the possibilities of popularizing this elegant Istanbulite/Turkish model in the modern era. Within this context, several debates are addressed, such as whether gentility is innate or acquired, the reasons behind its historical decline, and whether the term “efendi” carries negative connotations—such as being a slave owner or possessing a “slave-minded” disposition. Furthermore, the Istanbul Gentleman is compared with other archetypes, such as the English Gentleman, highlighting their similarities and differences. Ultimately, the article argues that being an Istanbul Gentleman signifies a person who has sincerely and successfully integrated the Istanbul-specific values of akl-ı selim (sound reason), kalb-i selim (a pure heart), and zevk-i selim (refined taste) into their personality. It is concluded that preserving and promoting this unique human model today is both possible and essential.
