Turk Kulturu ve Haci Bektas Veli - Arastirma Dergisi, no.88, pp.97-109, 2018 (Scopus)
Hacı Bektaş-ı Veli is a Turkish Sufi who interpreted Islam according to the conditions of his time. Hacı Bektaş Veli’s Makâlât is a program that shows the stages of complete human development which is called as “Dört Kapı Kırk Makâm”. In this book of Hacı Bektaş-ı Veli, the concepts of “reason” and “wisdom” are also included. He simply explained these concepts by saying “Every path would be ended with darkness without wisdom”. The aim of this study is to reveal the importance of reason-wisdom relationship according to this doctrine. For this purpose, Hacı Bektaş Veli’s Makâlât and different sources were examined and the importance of reason and wisdom in human life was investigated. Document analysis method was used in the present study. In accordance with the method of the study, Hacı Bektaş Veli’s Makâlât was analyzed in detail and the parts related to reason and wisdom were especially focused. In some cases, the original quotes were used without any paraphrasing. The concepts of reason and wisdom in Makâlât were analyzed by a set of analogies. According to Hacı Bektaş, the reason is the balance of Allah on earth. Faith is related with and abided by reason. Reason can be protected by three ways: patience, shame and conviction. Wisdom should be based on three dimensions: the obvious verses, definite and explicit fards and those except for these dimensions mentioned. According to Hacı Bektaş Veli gaining wisdom is a priority for worship. So the second phase of Sharia is to gain wisdom. Therefore, individuals having wisdom should be respected by others. The doctrine of Hacı Bektaş Veli show how he gave importance to reason and wisdom. In this sense, he tried to shed light on the contemporary Understanding of Islam by making a synthesis of the Turkish-Islamic faith.
