Shaft of the tibia is the most common site of open fractures. One of the factors which complicate treatment of such fractures is bone defects resulting from the trauma itself, or subsequent infections. In this report, we are presenting a case in whom a 21 cm bone defect resulting from infection following a grade 3B open fracture of the tibia was treated by distraction osteogenesis using Ilizarov external fixator.
