When driving at night, the lights from oncoming vehicle headlights severely restrict drivers' visibility, posing a significant threat to road safety. To address this problem, image enhancement methods were developed in this study that reduce bright regions while preserving the clarity of essential road details. Three distinct adaptive transformation techniques were applied in the study: Mean Adaptive Exponent Law Transformation, Standard Deviation-Based Cubic Polynomial Transformation and Statistically Guided Exponential Contrast Enhancement. Within the scope of this work, a unique dataset of 400 photographs featuring entirely natural nighttime driving conditions has also been introduced to the literature. The implemented methods optimized pixel values to suppress glare effects and improved the visibility of other features and details on the road. As a result of the tests, it was observed that the brightness in the glare regions was reduced by 56%, 24%, and 36%, respectively. In evaluations conducted on various images, the methods achieved SSIM scores ranging between 0.824 and 0.980 and PSNR values between 22.45 dB and 36.34 dB. All methods exhibited high performance suitable for real-time applications with processing times between 3 ms and 170 ms across different resolutions. The proposed methods can be integrated into real-time applications within night driving systems due to their low computational cost. This study offers a statistically adaptive and efficient solution to the difficulties encountered during nighttime driving. These findings hold promising potential for contributions to the field of image processing, along with the development of autonomous vehicles and the improvement of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
