Prof. İsmail Gelen

He was born in Samsun's Lâdik district (TR) in 1973. He completed his primary school education in Tayyar Mehmet Pasha Primary School and his secondary and high school education in Akpınar Teacher High School. In 1993, he graduated from Ondokuz Mayıs Univ. Amasya Faculty of Education, Department of Classroom Teaching. He was appointed as a classroom teacher in Ünye district of Ordu under the Ministry of National Education and worked as a classroom teacher in villages with combined classes. In 1994, he became one of the only two YÖK scholarship holders in his field to study abroad for master's and doctorate degrees in his field in the YLS- Overseas Graduate Education Examination (YLS) conducted by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK-ÖSYM). He received advanced language proficiency from Hacettepe University School of Foreign Languages. In the conditions of the day, the right to study abroad was prevented due to economic and general reasons. Thereupon, he became the only person who was entitled to enter the master's programme among 50 applicants in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Çukurova University, which has a world-class staff.  He also passed the foreign language proficiency exam at Çukurova University. He completed his master's and doctorate education here.  The full text of Gelen's theses, supervised by Prof. Dr. Ahmet Doğanay, is available in the national thesis centre.  After his doctorate, he took many positions at Mustafa Kemal University and Ondokuz Mayıs University. He has taken and is taking many duties such as Vice Dean, Head of Department, Head of Department, Founding Centre Directorate, academic consultancy, board memberships, accreditation board membership, quality board membership, education and training commission membership, numerous jury duties, thesis consultancy, internal auditor, mentor, referee, evaluator, project evaluator and monitor in TUBITAK, consultancy in MEB / TTKB, MEB Shura Membership, many referees in SSCI and international field indexes, TÜBİTAK evaluator and project monitor. He founded various undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programmes, research centres and academic units such as Vocational High Schools in universities. He received post-doctoral education at the University of Florida, USA. He worked in the USA, Canada, England, Portugal, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Norway, Kyrgyzstan, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Kazakhstan with lecturing, projects, academic studies, examinations and various duties. In addition to courses such as ‘Teaching Principles and Methods, Comparative Education, Scientific Research Methods, Critical and Analytical Thinking, Measurement and Evaluation’ at undergraduate level and ‘Curriculum Development, Applied Educational Statistics in SPSS, Thinking Skills and Development, New Approaches in Education, Curriculum Evaluation’ at graduate level, he teaches various synchronous and a-synchronous courses at OMU UZEM. He has conducted and is conducting 22 theses at graduate level. He is a referee and editorial board member in many indexed journals such as international ERIC database. İsmail Gelen, who has around 50 articles, 14 of which are SSCI articles, nearly 50 national and international papers, 21 books and chapters, 27 national and international projects, numerous panels, seminars, conferences, congresses, radio-tv-speeches, scientific meetings in which he actively participated, has 2245 Google Academic references and 30 i10-index as of 24 Feb 2025. Gelen, who is a member of YÖK- EPDAD (Education Faculties Programmes and Accreditation Association), is actively involved in accreditation processes on behalf of YÖK as an evaluator, team chairman, consistency commission member, EFAK officer. He is a university evaluator for YÖKAK (Higher Education Quality and Accreditation Board) and an expert for ÜAK (Interuniversity Council). He is fluent in English and Ottoman Turkish. İsmail Gelen, who defines himself as ‘both a scholar and a student’, is married and has four children. On 6 May 2023, he was appointed as a Professor. Prof. Dr. Gelen is currently working at Ondokuz Mayıs University, Faculty of Education, Department of Educational Sciences, Department of Curriculum and Instruction as Professor and Head of the Department.
